Is there any between teachers' unions and the recent teacher misconduct legislation?

Everyone must learn to work together!

I really believe in what Amanda said during her presentation, "its not just our responsibility but it is a shard responsibility." When we are dealing with children for 8 hours a day, their health does become part of our responsibility. We need to make sure to watch and see if children are looking sick or if they have their shots, not only to protect them, but also to protect everyone else in your classroom including yourself. I also think the school has been roped into this idea of shared responsibility because we have the most contact with the parents and they tend to listen to us more so than other people dealing with their children. This is why we have the mobile dentist come to school or the eye doctor because children will most likely be attending school and the parents don't have to do anything but sign a sheet of paper to let their children be taken care of. It is added pressure to the schools but I think this could be something that helps the students out more than anything we could ever teach them. While in school we the teachers are the moms and dads of our students and it is our job to make sure they are healthy while they are with us during the day.

  1. I agree, but I also disagree. I think that we do need to watch for health problems in our students and keep track of their needs, but only the ones that we can change and effect. For instance, I cannot change what my children are packed for lunch. It drives me crazy that I have students who heat donuts and jelly sandwiches for lunch, and half way through math are falling asleep. Or that I have kids who eat every last bit of their lunch because they didn't have breakfast and are starving. I try so hard to help all of my children the best I can, but I can only do so much. It is my prayer that we each give them 100% of what we can in the time we have them and that they make it through an evening at home and back to us in one piece the next day. Then, we get to start all over.
